The Norton Simon Museum

When I first entered the museum my friend wanted to see what was downstairs, so we first encountered the Asian collection of art. Having taken a sculpture class in the past, I greatly admired the work and detail that went into the pieces, but more so how long ago these pieces were made. Working with marble or stone is extremely difficult and takes a lot of time and patience, so I was literally in awe as I looked at the different statues that were displayed. They also had watercolor paintings and I couldn't believe how much detail went into each and every aspect of the pictures, especially because they were fairly small, but still contained so much. Also, the way that the paintings were so precisely done added to my enjoyment and appreciation.

My favorite part of the museum, which I spent a majority of time in was the section with the portraits. I am an avid people watcher, which is probably what made this most favorable. It was really amazing to read up and learn about the different stories behind each portrait because it added to and made sense of the tone or mood of each piece of art. These artists really paid attention to expressing the feelings and emotions in the facial expressions, posture, and details in their pieces of art. The color schemes used also played a huge role in depicting what the portrait was expressing. I was able to really appreciate all of the art for what it was because the themes were consistent within each painting. I loved that I didn't have just one favorite piece because it allowed me to admire all of the art for what it was.

ArtWalk @ The Pomona Arts Colony

I had been wanting to visit a gallery or museum for a while, so I was very excited and eager to see what the ArtWalk had in store. My first stop was at The OBJCT Gallery. The work there can be described as a mixture of modern art and design. When I asked which piece was the most popular, I was directed towards this eggplant table.

Although there were other pieces that were larger or looked as though they had taken more time, this piece somehow appealed to people the most. After speaking with the curator of the gallery I found out that the artist of this piece of work is an architect by the name of Greg Lynn. I found it very interesting and fun that he used toys, and furthermore how all of the pieces used seemed to fit perfectly together. What made it even more interesting to me was how the top was made out of something called panelite.

I asked the curator how it is made and he was unsure, but after researching I found out that it is something that architects use because it not only looks nice, but is also a fairly strong material. I like that it looked like a honeycomb or sturdy bubble wrap. Even though the eggplant piece was most popular, I liked this duck table better because I tend to gravitate towards things that I feel match or colors that I feel go together.

The next gallery that I went to was the dA Center For The Arts. This gallery definitely appeared to contain pieces that people thought were most "hot." Upon entering I first noticed this painting because I liked the colors used and as I mentioned above, I really admire particular color usage.

The next piece that caught my attention was "Ballarina Folklorico" by Yolanda Gonzalez. I liked that it had a modern victorian edge and how the different layers of paint were used. I thought it was a very pretty picture and I also liked the gold accents with the watercolor use.

Another piece of art that I enjoyed was called "Sweets for the Sweet" by Leslie Brown. What caught my attention with this was the use of actual sprinkles on the painting. Also, the detail that went into the different aspects of the painting appeared to have been paid close attention to. I like that this picture captured items in which some individuals may define as "sweet," but also the mixed media that was used that added to the creativity and uniqueness of the finished product.

Another work by the same artist that I, and many other admirers, found to be very "hot" and appealing was "Birth of the New Consciousness," which also contained the use of mixed media within a painting, which made the art pop out more, adding to the effect of the overall design. The contrast of colors and shapes added to the feel of this piece of art.
